Routine Dental Check-ups

Routine dental check ups are an important part of your dental health care. Your David Neal dentist can help you maintain good dental health, keeping your mouth and gums healthy.

What happens at your routine check-up?

At your routine visit, your dentist will:

  • Check your teeth and gums, your overall oral health and dental hygiene
  • Evaluate your risk of tooth and root decay, gum disease, bone loss or tooth loss
  • Evaluate your bite function and jaws for any problems
  • Check your mouth and gums for signs for oral cancers
  • Advise you on lifestyle changes that may help you maintain a clean and healthy mouth and good dental health.
  • This includes dietary advice, smoking cessation and how to avoid periodontal disease.
  • Your dentist may recommend a hygienist appointment.
  • Offer advice to patients with missing teeth or dentures, including options such as dental implants.

Regular dental check ups can help identify problems that may cause need treatment in the future if left untreated.

At David Neal Dental, we recommend a dental check-up every six months for every member of the family, unless otherwise advised by your dental team.

Hygienist Appointments / Scale and Polish

Dental hygienists are a key part of your dental team, providing an important service in preventative dental care.

Regular visits to your hygienist can make a big difference in keeping your teeth, gums and mouth healthy and in helping you maintain a good oral hygiene routine at home.

What do dental hygienists do?

Dental hygienists professionally clean your teeth using ultrasonic cleaners that remove plaque, tartar and deposits that build up on and in between your teeth.

Stains on your teeth can be removed.

They check for signs of oral diseases including tooth decay, gum disease (gingivitis) and oral cancers.

Dental hygienists offer oral health advice and guidance

Your dental hygienist can offer support and advice to help improve your oral health and dental hygiene.

They can demonstrate tooth and gum brushing techniques to help avoid plaque and tartar build-up.

They can advise on lifestyle habits to help prevent tooth decay, tooth loss, advanced gum disease and bad breath.

Regular professional cleaning helps protect against dental problems that may need extensive treatment in the future.

How often should I see my dental hygienist?

We recommend most adults should visit a registered dental hygienist every four months.

Dental Fillings

At David Neal Dental Northampton we offer composite fillings to restore decayed and broken teeth, helping to restore a healthy mouth.

Made from a composite material that is matched to the shade of your existing natural teeth, these fillings give patients a more natural finish.

As well as a restorative treatment for cavities, they can be used in cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of your smile by changing tooth colour or reshaping disfigured teeth.

What to expect when you have a filling

Your dentist will usually administer a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth being treated, and the surrounding gum.

The decay is removed using a drill, then the cavity is filled using the composite material.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are protective covers worn over your teeth and gums.

They protect your arches, teeth and gums – and your smile!

They can be for use at night or when you are participating in sport.

Why has my dentist recommended a mouth guard?

At David Neal Dental Northampton, our dentists can provide individually crafted mouth guards to protect against:

  • Tooth grinding (bruxism), which can lead to chipped teeth and headaches (night guards).
  • Sports injuries sustained to your mouth (sports guards)
