Dental Check-ups
At David Neal Dental Langport we offer routine check-ups for all members of the family.
Dental check-ups are important for both your dental health and general health. They include a full mouth examination and an oral cancer screening.
What happens at your routine check-up?
At your routine visit, your dentist will check your overall dental health including:
- Checking your teeth and gums and dental hygiene
- Evaluating your risk of tooth and root decay, gum disease or bone loss
- Evaluating your bite function, checking your jaws for any problems
- Checking your mouth for signs for oral cancers
- Advice on how to keep your mouth healthy and maintain overall dental heath e.g. tooth decay prevention, dietary advice and smoking cessation.
- Offering tooth restoration advice for people with missing teeth or dentures
- Your dentist may recommend an appointment with a dental hygienist
Your dentist may take in-surgery xrays or 3D scans to help their evaluations.
Regular dental check ups are an important part of a good oral health routine.
They help avoid serious dental issues in the future and the need for potentially expensive restorative treatment and procedures.
Unless otherwise advised by your dentist or dental hygienist, we recommend dental check-ups every six months for every member of the family, both children and adults.
Hygiene Visits / Scale and Polish
Dental hygienists are qualified dental professionals who provide preventive dental care. They are a key part of your dental team.
Regular visits to your dental hygienist help keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy, and support you in maintaining a good at-home dental hygiene routine.
What do dental hygienists do?
Dental hygienists clean your teeth professionally using ultrasonic cleaners to remove plaque, tartar and deposits that build up on and in between your teeth.
- Stains on your teeth can be removed.
- They check for signs of oral diseases including tooth decay, gum disease (gingivitis) and oral cancers.
Dental hygienists provide oral health guidance
- Hygienists can demonstrate dental hygiene techniques, including how to floss and brush your teeth and gums correctly.
- They can advise on lifestyle habits to help prevent teeth decay and bad breath.
- Dental hygiene advice can help avoid serious problems such as advanced gum disease, helping your future oral health and protecting against the need for extensive dental treatments in the future.
How often should I see my dental hygienist?
We recommend most adults should visit a registered dental hygienist every four months.
Dental Fillings
At David Neal Dental Langport we offer composite fillings to fill your cavities.
Composite fillings are made from a material that is matched to the shade of your existing natural teeth, giving a more natural finish.
They can also be used to enhance your smile by changing tooth colour or by reshaping disfigured teeth.
What to expect when you have a filling
Your dentist will usually administer a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth being treated, and the surrounding gum.
The decay is removed using a drill, then the cavity is filled using the composite material.
Mouth Guards
Mouth guards are protective covers worn over your teeth and gums.
They protect your arches, teeth and gums – and your smile!
They can be for use at night or when you are participating in sport.
Why might my dentist recommend a mouth guard?
At David Neal Dental Langport, our dental technicians provide individually crafted mouth guards to protect against:
- Bruxism / tooth grinding, which can lead to headaches and chipped teeth (night guards)
- Sports injuries to your mouth (sports guards)
Emergency Treatment
We hold a limited number of emergency appointments for registered David Neal Dental patients who are experiencing dental related pain and swelling. Where possible, emergency appointments are given on the same day.
If you are in need of emergency dental care outside of normal working hours, please call 01458 253888 to be transferred to the on-call dentist who will offer help and advice, or call 111.
What can I expect at an emergency appointment at David Neal Dental Langport?
Emergency appointments vary according to patient needs. They are usually not long-length – our dentists aim to provide immediate pain relief and prepare you for remedial dental treatment as required.
Our Reception Team will be happy to book you in for any further treatment advised by your dentist.
