Dental Check-ups

At David Neal Dental Hastings we offer routine check-ups for every member of the family – adults and children.

Check-ups include a full mouth examination.

What happens at your routine check-up?

At your routine visit, taking your overall medical health history into account, your dentist will check your oral health status including:

  • Checking your teeth and gums, your overall oral health and oral hygiene
  • Evaluating your risk of tooth and root decay, gum disease or bone loss
  • Evaluating your bite function and jaws for any problems
  • Checking your mouth and gums for signs for oral cancers
  • Advising you on lifestyle changes that could help or improve your overall oral heath. These could include dietary advice, smoking cessation and how to prevent tooth decay
  • Offering advice and solutions for people with missing teeth or dentures
  • Your dentist may recommend an appointment with a dental hygienist as a preventive dental care treatment
  • Your dentist may take in-surgery dental x-rays, 3D scans and intra-oral pictures to help with their evaluations.

Regular dental check ups are key to preventive oral care.

They can help to avoid the need for potentially expensive restorative dental treatment in the future.

They are also an opportunity to discuss any dental concerns and possible preventive treatment and to learn more about smile makeovers.

We recommend routine dental check-ups every six months for every member of the family, unless otherwise advised by your dental team.

Dental Hygiene / Scale and Polish

Registered dental hygienists are are preventive oral health professionals who, along with the rest of your professional dental team, play an important role in providing patient care.

Regular visits to your dental hygienist (oral hygienist) can play an important part in keeping your teeth, gums and mouth healthy, and in helping you maintain a good dental hygiene routine at home.

What does a dental hygienist do?

Dental hygienists focus on preventive oral care, removing plaque, tartar and deposits that build up on and in between your teeth using ultrasonic cleaners.

  • Stains on your teeth can be removed
  • They check for signs of oral diseases including tooth decay, gum disease (gingivitis) and oral cancers.

Dental hygienists provide oral health guidance

  • They can demonstrate tooth brushing techniques and how to brush your gums properly.
  • They can advise on lifestyle habits to help prevent decay and bad breath.
  • This can help avoid serious dental problems such as advanced gum disease.
  • This, in turn, helps protect against the need for extensive dental treatments in the future.

How often should I see my dental hygienist?

We recommend most adults should visit a registered dental hygienist every four months.

Dental Fillings

At David Neal Dental Hastings we use composite fillings to fill your cavities.

Composite fillings give a more natural finish as they’re made from a material that can be matched to the shade of your existing natural teeth.

They can also be used to enhance the look of your smile by changing tooth colour or by reshaping disfigured teeth.

What to expect when you have a filling

In most cases, your dentist will administer a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding gum.

A drill is used to remove any decay, then the cavity is filled using the composite material.

Mouth guards are protective covers worn over your teeth and gums.
They protect your arches, teeth and gums – and your smile!
Some are worn at night, others when you are participating in sport.

Why might my dentist recommend a mouth guard?

At David Neal Dental Hastings, our dental technicians provide individually crafted mouth guards.

  • Night guards are used to treat tooth grinding (bruxism), which can lead to headaches and chipped teeth
  • Sports guards protect against injuries to your mouth during sporting activities
