Routine Dental Care

Dental Check-ups

At David Neal Dental Eastbourne we offer routine check-ups with a full mouth examination for all members of the family – adults and children.

They are an opportunity for patients to discuss any dental problems, or simply ensure they maintain good oral health.

What happens at your routine check-up?

At your routine visit, your dentist will check your oral health including:

  • Checking your teeth, gums, overall oral health and dental hygiene
  • An evaluation of your risk of tooth and root decay, gum disease or bone loss
  • Evaluating your bite function and jaws for any problems
  • Checking your mouth and gums for signs for oral cancers
  • Giving you advice on lifestyle changes that may help your overall dental heath, including dietary and smoking cessation, how to prevent tooth decay and maintain a healthy mouth.
  • Offering advice for people with missing teeth, or who wear dentures
  • Your dentist may recommend an appointment with a dental hygienist
  • Your dentist may take in-surgery xrays, 3D scans and intra-oral pictures to help with their evaluations.

Regular dental check ups are key to a good oral health routine and help avoid serious, potentially expensive, dental issues in the future.

We recommend dental check-ups every six months for every member of the family, unless otherwise advised by your dental team.

Discussing other dental services

Your regular check ups are also an ideal time to ask your dentist about any smile make-over or cosmetic treatments you may be interested in, such as teeth straightening, teeth whitening or veneers.

At David Neal Dental we also offer Teeth in a Day / All on 4 dental implants – the ideal fixed teeth solution.

Hygiene Visits / Scale and Polish

Regular visits to your dental hygienist can play an important part in keeping your teeth, gums and mouth healthy, and in helping you maintain a good dental hygiene routine at home.

Dental hygienists are a key part of your dental team, playing an important role in providing preventative dental care.

What do dental hygienists do?

Dental hygienists professionally clean your teeth using ultrasonic cleaners that remove plaque, tartar and deposits that build up on and in between your teeth.

  • Stains on your teeth can be removed.
  • They check for signs of oral diseases including tooth decay, gum disease (gingivitis) and oral cancers.

Dental hygienists provide oral health guidance

  • They can demonstrate tooth brushing techniques and how to brush your gums properly.
  • They can advise on lifestyle habits to help prevent decay and bad breath.
  • This can help avoid serious dental problems such as advanced gum disease.
  • This, in turn, helps protect against the need for extensive dental treatments in the future.

How often should I see my dental hygienist?

We recommend most adults should visit a registered dental hygienist every four months.

Dental Fillings

At David Neal Dental Eastbourne we offer composite fillings to fill your cavities.

These composite fillings give a more natural finish as they are made from a material that is matched to the shade of your  existing natural teeth.

They can also be used to enhance the look of your smile by changing tooth colour or by reshaping disfigured teeth.

What to expect when you have a filling

Your dentist will usually administer a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth being treated, and the surrounding gum.

The decay is removed using a drill, then the cavity is filled using the composite material.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are protective covers worn over your teeth and gums.

They protect your arches, teeth and gums – and your smile!

They can be for use at night or when you are participating in sport.

Why might my dentist recommend a mouth guard?

At David Neal Dental Eastbourne, our dental technicians can provide individually crafted mouth guards to protect against:

  • Bruxism / tooth grinding, which can lead to headaches and chipped teeth (night guards)
  • Sports injuries to your mouth (sports guards)

Emergency

Emergency Treatment

Our dental practice holds a limited number of emergency appointments for registered David Neal Dental patients who are experiencing dental related pain and swelling.

Where possible, emergency appointments are given on the same day.

What can I expect at an emergency appointment at David Neal Dental Eastbourne?

Emergency appointments are not long-length, but our dentists aim to remove the source of pain to give immediate relief and prepare you for remedial dental treatment as required.

Our Reception team will be happy to book you in for any further treatment advised by your dentist.
